Celiac Disease

Celiac Disease is a life-long autoimmune disorder and malabsorption disease that affects the small intestine. It is caused by a reaction to the gluten protein and prevents the body from absorbing essential nutrients and minerals, causing malnourishment.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

A visit to our Palm Springs gastroenterologist is the best way to determine if you have Celiac Disease or if another condition may be causing your symptoms. Diagnostic tests include:

  • Blood tests to detect specific antibodies.
  • Upper Endoscopy (EGD) to examine the intestines and take biopsies.
  • Biopsy tests examine the tissue of the intestines for damage to the nutrient-absorbing villi.

Currently, the only treatment option for Celiac Disease is a gluten-free diet. We recommend that our patients with Celiac Disease work with a dietician or nutritionist to adjust their diets in a healthful way and ensure they are able to receive the nutrients they need. With a proper diet, patients are able to live long, healthy, normal lives despite having the condition.

Awareness and support for Celiac Disease is growing, along with medical research. In time, it is possible that a different treatment or cure may be found.
